Factories, warehouses, ports, tunnels, power plants and car parks expose luminaires to dust, water jets, vibration, impacts and chemicals. A fixture that works well in an office can fail within months in these conditions. Two ratings decide whether a luminaire will survive: the IP rating<\/strong> for protection against dust and water, and the IK rating<\/strong> for resistance to mechanical impact. This guide explains both and shows which values to specify for each industrial and infrastructure application.<\/p>\n

What Does the IP Rating Mean?<\/h2>\n

The IP code (IEC 60529) has two digits. The first shows protection against solid particles and dust, the second against water.<\/p>\n
