Factories, warehouses, ports, tunnels, power plants and car parks expose luminaires to dust, water jets, vibration, impacts and chemicals. A fixture that works well in an office can fail within months in these conditions. Two ratings decide whether a luminaire will survive: the IP rating for protection against dust and water, and the IK rating for resistance to mechanical impact. This guide explains both and shows which values to specify for each industrial and infrastructure application.

For harsh environments, compare Alton Ray industrial LED floodlights and LED high bay lights with IP65 to IP66 die-cast aluminium bodies.

What Does the IP Rating Mean?

The IP code (IEC 60529) has two digits. The first shows protection against solid particles and dust, the second against water.

Rating Dust protection Water protection Typical use
IP20 Fingers and objects over 12 mm None Dry offices and corridors
IP54 Dust protected Splashing water Workshops, covered car parks
IP65 Dust tight Water jets Warehouses, food plants, canopies
IP66 Dust tight Powerful water jets Outdoor areas, ports, street lighting, wash-down zones
IP67 Dust tight Temporary immersion In-ground and fountain lighting

What Does the IK Rating Mean?

The IK code (IEC 62262) measures the impact energy a luminaire can withstand without damage.

Rating Impact energy Equivalent Typical use
IK06 1 J 500 g dropped from 20 cm Protected indoor areas
IK08 5 J 1.7 kg dropped from 30 cm Schools, stairs, public corridors
IK09 10 J 5 kg dropped from 20 cm Sports halls, warehouses with forklifts
IK10 20 J 5 kg dropped from 40 cm Car parks, tunnels, vandal-prone areas

Recommended IP and IK by Application

Application Minimum IP Minimum IK Recommended luminaire
Warehouse and logistics hall IP65 IK08 LED high bay
Heavy industry, foundry, steel plant IP66 IK08 High bay with high-temperature driver
Food and beverage plant IP65 to IP69K IK07 Sealed linear or cleanroom luminaire
Port, container yard, rail yard IP66 IK08 High-power floodlight on high mast
Car park and tunnel IP65 IK10 Vandal-resistant linear luminaire
Facade, perimeter and security IP66 IK08 LED floodlight with narrow optics

Beyond IP and IK: Other Durability Factors

  • Thermal management: die-cast aluminium housings with large fins keep LED junction temperature low, which protects lumen output and lifetime in hot halls.
  • Surge protection: industrial grids and long outdoor cables need 6 to 10 kV surge protection to protect drivers from lightning and switching spikes.
  • Corrosion resistance: coastal and chemical environments need powder-coated or anodised housings and stainless steel fixings.
  • Vibration: cranes, compressors and bridges require secure brackets and safety cables.
  • Ambient temperature: check the rated operating range (for example -30 °C to +50 °C) for outdoor and furnace areas.

Optics and Mounting Height

Durability is only half of the solution; the light must also reach the working plane. Use narrow beams (30 to 60 degrees) for mounting heights above 10 m and high masts, wide beams (90 to 120 degrees) for heights of 6 to 8 m, and asymmetric optics for facades, yards and roads. Correct optics reduce the number of luminaires and the total energy cost.

FAQ

Is IP65 enough for outdoor lighting?
IP65 protects against dust and water jets and is suitable for most covered outdoor areas. For fully exposed sites, ports and areas cleaned with high-pressure water, choose IP66.

What IK rating do I need for a car park?
Car parks and tunnels should use IK10 luminaires because of the risk of vehicle impact and vandalism.

Are IP and IK ratings tested?
Yes. Both are verified by standard laboratory tests (IEC 60529 and IEC 62262). Always ask the manufacturer for the test report.
